Fundraising blitz success

Thanks to enthusiastic participants and generous donors, the Art Museum of Kangaroo Island Easter Sunday quiz and auction (Do you know your arts from your elbow?) was a roaring success.

The auction was a better-than-expected success with almost $6000 raised from seven items (one of which was a $60 pumpkin).

The AMKI summer fundraising blitz has raised enough for the organisation to proceed with contracting a project coordinator, starting at one day a week. That will be an enormous help to the progress of the AMKI project.

The number of KI businesses that willingly donated to the event, and the previous lottery, indicates that they understand the benefits that AMKI will bring to the island.

For the auction, Nick Hannaford put together the Snellings Beach Getaway Package of lunch at The Enchanted Fig Tree, two nights at WanderPod, and a Sealink car and passengers return trip to KI.

Other fabulous auction items were two nights at Cape Hart Retreat, a Janet Ayliffe etching print, a sand dune buggy experience with Little Sahara Adventure Centre, a nocturnal tour for two with KI Hire a Guide, Japanese cups from Lori Smith and of course the pumpkin grown in the Penneshaw community garden.

Many thanks also to: Kangaroo Island Council; The Islander Estate, Dudley and False Cape wineries; KI Brewery; KI Source; Millie Mae’s Pantry; Terry White Chemmart; Penneshaw IGA, Community Business Centre and Beach Bar; Ingrams Home Hardware; and Kangaroo Island Creative Co. They allowed us to put together prize packages for the winning and second-place teams, stock the bar and rent the hall half-price.

It’s worth mentioning again the generous lottery prize donors: Exceptional Kangaroo Island, Thorn Park on the Island, Womadelaide, Antechamber Bay Retreats, and Sunset Food and Wine.

Easter Sunday arts quiz

Do you know your arts from your elbow?

If you want to find out, and have a lot of fun in the process, book now through Humanitix for the next AMKI event – 4pm Easter Sunday 31 March at Penneshaw Town Hall.

Book for your table of 8, or join in with others at the hall; bring your supper and help us by buying drinks at the bar. And there’s an auction!

Never fear, our definition of ‘arts’ is pretty broad – there’ll be something for eveyone. See you there!

KI Council candidates

We’ve asked 3 questions of the candidates for mayor and councillor at the current KI Council election:

Dear council candidate

The Art Museum of Kangaroo Island, is a visionary and adventurous proposal which would reveal Kangaroo Island art to the world and draw world art to Kangaroo Island. For more information about the value of AMKI for Kangaroo Island, please see the AMKI Business Case.
Arts and cultural tourism is the strongest growing sector of global tourism and tourism plays a major role in the Kangaroo Island economy. The wellbeing benefits of the arts in practice and consumption are also clearly documented – benefits the fire-affected community of Kangaroo Island will continue to need.

The Art Museum of Kangaroo Island committee would appreciate candidates’ responses to these questions:
1. Do you believe that Council should be an active supporter of and advocate for the arts on Kangaroo Island?
2. Do you support the community-based Art Museum of Kangaroo Island proposal?
3. Do you support AMKI being built near Kingscote on Lot 460 Seaview Road overlooking the Bay of Shoals.

Here is a summary of their answers. Their answers in full are here

We’re in Nature Festival SA

The Art Museum of Kangaroo Island committee is back with a splash. We are showing en plein air films’, Island to Outback, which features KI artists at a Cowards Spring art camp and at home on the island.

The fundraising event also includes supper, a bar, an auction, a raffle, historical art and a few surprises (i.e. we are exploring a few other bits and pieces).

Please join us and help all Kangaroo Island artists on 9 October.
